Interview with Beata Owczarek
Write a short biography; who you are, how old are you, where are you from and what do you do?
My name is Beata Owczarek and I’m 20 years old. I grew up in
Bielsko-Biała. When I was 12 I went to School of Fine Arts and I
studied drawing, painting, designing and history of art for six years.
After I finished my studies in Bielsko- Biala I got a place in very
prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Katovice, where currently I’m
studying second year of Graphic Design.
What is your favourite piece of work and why?
In creating I really love to implement my ideas. I like it when I
see that my idea is faithfully transferred to the paper. This gives me
the most joy.
What have you been working on recently?
Currently I’m working on the few projects from University, mostly
exercises, which help me with better understanding and discovering ins
and outs of graphic design. In the spare time I work on my private
projects, mostly illustrations.
What you want to achieve in future?
I’d like to become an illustrator. One of my biggest passions is
music, therefore I would love to work with musicians, creating album
covers and designing disc for them. Also I’d like to illustrate
children books etc.
How would you describe your style?
It’s hard to say, I guess the strong/bold outlines are very
recognizable within my work. The “line” is very important to me.
I like to draw organic objects presented in unreal and geometrical way.
I still keep learning new techniques and developing new skills. From
time to time I find new inspiration, usually a pattern, which I keep
using till I come across something new.
What are the most important influences that have moved you as an artist?
I am inspired by many contemporary artists.
Since childhood, I liked comic drawings.
However,music is the most powerful influence.
What are you trying to communicate with your art?
In some of my drawings, I like to use hidden meanings, which are
usually reflections of my personal issues. Generally I try to engage
the audience with my artwork and invite them to my arctic world.
I like to draw motifs which I find interesting and inspiring.
What does “being creative” mean to you?
Being creative is an ability to observe life from different point of
view to everyone else’s. Being able to break the boundaries and
express your ideas, even if they’re really unusual.
What was the best advice given to you as an artist?
I wouldn’t be able to say. Every day I get a lot of helpful and
valuable feedback from my professors and friends. As Fredrich Schiller
says “If you cannot please everyone with your actions and your artwork
– please only a few: top lease many is bad”
Do you have any exhibits to promote in the near future?
I guess for now I’m not ready for the exhibition. I have a little
ripen and develop consistent stuff.
Many artists struggle to find ways to sell their art. How do you sell your work? How do you market yourself?
What advice would you tell to young artists?
Nowadays artists sell and promote themselves on the internet. It’s
the easiest and the cheapest way to put your artwork out there.
Internet is accessible for almost everyone around the globe, which
makes it easier to be noticed. I use few websites to promote my
artwork. Also I’ve got my own blog, on which people can find all my
recent work.
What advice would you tell to young artists?
You have to set a target for yourself, which you’ll try to achieve
by working really hard. Listen to feedback from more experienced
artists, however, remember not to lose yourself.
